(Mech.) A shaft running at a constant speed is enabled to drive a machine at different speeds by means of two sets of pulleys, those in each set being arranged in steps, with diameters so chosen that the same band can work the different pairs of pulleys, so that a small pulley on the shaft drives a large one on the machine, or a large pulley on the shaft drives a small one on the machine ; either set of pulleys is a speed-cone ; called also Speed-pulley.
