born in 1826, was Attorney-General of North Carolina from 1852 to 1855, and a member of the State Legislature from 1858 to 1860. He attained the rank of brigadier-general in the Confederate service and was engaged in all the important battles of the Army of Northern Virginia. Since 1872 he has served in the U.S. Senate as a Democrat. His present term expires in 1895.
