[L.] (Music.) A kind of chant of Jewish and of early Christian worship, extremely simple, admitting double measure only, and notes of equal value. These Church modes, which have affected the character of all the best Church music ever since, were, as regards structure, substantially one with the ancient Greek modes (q.v.).
