His principal works are: "History of Girolamo Savonarola and his Times" (2 vols., 1859-61; new and much improved ed. 1887-88); "Niccolo Machiavelli and his Times" (3 vols., 1877-82; new ed. 3 vols., 1895); "Ancient Legends and Traditions Illustrating the Divine Comedy" (1865); "Essays Critical, Historical, and Literary" (1868); "Teaching History" (1869); "The School and the Social Question in Italy" (1872); "A Treatise on the Social Question in Italy" (1902).
