[Gr.] In Gr. Hist., naucraries were political divisions of the Athenian people, the naucrarians being simply householders. After the time of Solon each naucrary was called on to provide one war-ship, and thus the word came to be connected with, a ship, and the navy; though akin rather to the verb, I inhabit.
