A muscle situate at the posterior part of the cheek, and lying upon the ramus of the lower jaw-bone. It is long, quadrilateral, and is attached, above, to the inferior edge and to the inner surface of the zygomatic arch; below, it terminates at the angle of the jaw, and at the outer surface and inferior margin of the ramus of that bone. It is composed of an intermixturo of fleshy and aponeurotic fibres. its office is to raise the lower jaw, and to act in mastication.
