An American naturalist; born at Springfield, Mass., July 19, 1838. From 1865 to 1869 he was a member of various scientific expeditions to Brazil. the Rocky Mountains, and Florida. In 1870 he was appointed assistant in ornithology at the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Cambridge, Mass., and in 1885 curator of ornithology and mammalogy in the American Museum of Natural History in New York city. He is part author with E. Coues of "Monographs of North American Rodentia" (1877); and has also published among other works, "History of North American Pinnipeds"; "Mammals of Patagonia".
