Was born in 1823. He was early identified with the anti-slavery cause. He left the ministry in 1858, and has since devoted himself to literature. He enlisted in the Civil War in 1862, was made colonel of the first regiment of colored troops, and captured Jacksonville. He was a Massachusetts Congressman in 1880 and 1881. He is an earnest advocate of woman suffrage. He has contributed largely to current literature, and has published two histories of the United States.
