A celebrated French zoologist; born at Montbeliard, Aug. 23, 1769; died at Paris, May 13, 1832. His first great work, fruit of most laborious researches, was "Lectures on Comparative Anatomy" (5 vols., 1801), comprising for the most part only such points of molluscan anatomy as he himself had developed. It was the same with all his works: they are records of most painstaking labor and study. His grand generalizations on the facts of nature appear in the "Discourse on the Revolutions of the Earth's Surface and on the Changes They have Brought About in the Animal Kingdom". His master work is "The Animal Kingdom" (4 vols., 1817).
