(1787-1890), Senator from New Jersey from 1829 to 1835, was nominated for Vice-President by the Whigs in 1844 on the ticket with Clay, but defeated. From 1839 to 1850 he was chancellor of the University of New York, and from 1850 to his death president of Rutgers College.
