An attempt to introduce freemasonry into the colonies was made in 1730 by the appointment of a provincial grand master of New Jersey, but so far as is known the first lodge was established in 1733 at Boston. Others speedily followed. After the securing of independence the lodges established grand lodges in the separate States. For the history of the opposition to freemasonry in the United States, see Anti-Masonic party.
