An Irish journalist, statesman, and author; born at Adare Abbey, Ireland, Feb. 12, 1841. After graduating from Oxford he entered the army; but left it in 1867 for journalism, being war correspondent for the Daily Telegraph in Abyssinia, and afterwards in the Franco-Prussian War. He was under-secretary for the colonies in Lord Salisbury's administrations. Of recent years he has been conspicuous as a yachtsman, having twice been challenger for the American Cup. Besides various magazine articles on hunting, he published: "The Great Divide"; "Notes on Irish Architecture"; "The Soudan: Its History, Geography, and Characteristics"; "The Irish Question".
