An English statesman; born in Wimborne, St. Giles, Dorsetshire, July 22, 1621; died in Amsterdam, Jan. 22, 1683. He was a conspicuous figure in the history of his times; was the Achitophel of Dryden's satire. Macaulay gives a brilliant sketch of him in the essay on Sir William Temple. Ashley and Cooper rivers, in South Carolina, received their names from him. His "Characteristics of Men, Manners, Opinions, and Times" is a collection of his various writings.
