brother of Cyrus W. and David D., born in Connecticut in 1816, practised law with his brother, David Dudley, and went to California in 1849, being one of the founders of Marysville. In the first State Legislature he served on the Judiciary Committee, where he was active in improving the judiciary system. From 1857 to 1864 he was Judge of the California Supreme Court, and Chief Justice from 1859 to 1863, when he was appointed to the U. S. Supreme Court by President Lincoln. He was a Democratic member of the Electoral Commission in 1877. He still serves upon the supreme bench (1894).
