An American journalist, lecturer, and author; born at Lewisburg, W. Va., Feb. 13, 1843. He was secretary of the United States legation at London, 1870-71 and 1877-84. He is a frequent contributor to magazines. His chief works are: "Impressions of London Social Life" (1875); "Essays at Home and Elsewhere" (1882); "Zwieback, or Notes of a Professional Exile" (1887).
