(?1690-1770), a Scotchman, was Governor of Virginia from 1752 to 1758. His chief merit was his perception of the military abilities of Washington, whom he sent upon the mission to the French commander on the Ohio, and then upon the military expedition which opened the French and Indian War. In the conduct of the war, he quarreled with the Virginian Assembly, and suggested taxation of the colonies. He was unpopular and incapable.
