The name of a colony established in Newfoundland in 1623 by George Calvert, first Lord Baltimore. He visited the colony himself in 1627, remaining there a few weeks. The colony was established under the royal charter and was so called after Avalon, in Somersetshire, England. Subsequently Calvert, becoming dissatisfied with this colony, obtained the grant which resulted in the founding of Maryland.
