(1814-1863), served in both branches of the Alabama Legislature. He represented Alabama in the U. S. Congress as a Democrat from 1844 to 1847. He was a leader of the extreme party in the South. He proposed the formation of committees of safety in the Southern States "to fire the Southern heart." He made a tour through the North and West during the campaign of 1860, urging the rejection of the Republican candidate. He was a Confederate Commissioner to Europe from 1861 to 1862, when he became a member of the Confederate Senate. Life by Du Bose.
