An English chronicler; born at Bosley, Cheshire (?), about 1520 (?); died at Bramcote (?), 1580 (?). Nothing is known of his personality. The famous "Chronicles"- not wholly his, however- reveal an accomplished historical student, specially versed in Scotch affairs, which knowledge, however, may have been drawn from previous workers. The Elizabethan dramatists, especially Shakespeare, drew largely on this work for material.
