-
A membranous muscle, broader at its middle than at its extremities, and situate vertically in the lateral paries of the pharynx and velum palati. It includes the peristaphylo-pharyngens, pharyngo-staphylinus, and thyro-staphylinus of Winslow. When the two palato-pharyngei contract together, they depress the velum. They elevate and shorten the pharynx, and act principally in deglutition.
