A plant of the Nat. Order, Rubiaceae, native of the Malayan Peninsula and Indian Archipelago, which yields large quantities of the kind of Catechu known by the names Terra Japonica and Square Catechu, and which, in Indian commerce, is called Gambier or Gambir. It is a powerful astringent, much used in tanning, and in medicine. See Catechu.
