A Danish botanist; born at Copenhagen, Jan. 28, 1787; died at London, April 28, 1854. From 1815 till 1847 he was director of the botanic garden at Calcutta. He wrote: "An Essay on the Flora of Nepal" (1824-26); "Rare Asiatic Plants" (3 vols., 1830-32).
