A dried Indian fruit, of the plum kind, of different species of terminalia. Ord. combretanceae. Of this there are several varieties-the M. bellirica or belliric myrobalan bellegu, bellerrigi belnileg:- the M. chebila or chebule myrobalan; the M. Emblica or emblic myrobalan, and the M. indica, Asuar, indian or black myrobalan. All the myrobalans have am umpleasant, bitterish, very austere taste; and strike an inky blackness with a solution of steel. They are said to possess laxative as well as astringent properties.
