An Austrian poet and agitator; born in Duschnik, Bohemia, Oct. 15, 1821; died in Vienna, May 13, 1872. He was from youth an ardent social reformer, and wrote poems under this inspiration. His "Chalice and Sword" (1845) was distinctly revolutionary. He became a "poet of the people", participated in the movement of 1848, and was elected to the Frankfurt Parliament. His "Poetic Chronicle of Father Mauritius" (1849) attained a wide popularity. He lived in exile for some years, but continued to write poetry and prose in his wanderings, his reputation constantly increasing. Deep feeling and love of freedom permeate all his work.
