One of the military religious orders, founded in the twelfth century for the protection of pilgrims to Palestine, and the recovery of the Holy Sepulchre from the Saracens. Their rules agreed generally with the Benedictine. The Templars made the Mosque of Omar, known as the Khubbet-es-Sakrah, or Dome of the Rock, their church, and called it the Temple of the Lord. The order was suppressed by Clement V., with great cruelty and injustice, in the fourteenth century.
