(1794-1848), served throughout the War of 1812. He was promoted brigadier-general in 1846, with command in the West. During the Mexican War he established a provisional government in Santa Fe and fought the battle of San Pasqual, after which he was made major-general. In 1847 he was Governor of California. He wrote a "Manual of the Exercise and Manoeuvring of U. S. Dragoons."
