A Dutch poet and dramatist, considered by his contemporaries the greatest Latin poet of his time; born at Gand, 1604; died 1646. Among his works are: "Elegies"; "Greek Maria" and "Rosimunda", tragedies; "Esther", a tragi-comedy; "The Siege of Leyden" (1626), a tragedy written in Flemish; and various collections of shorter poems.
