Of Indiana, born in 1822, was a judge of probate from 1843 to 1846 and prosecuting attorney from 1847 to 1849. He was a member of the Indiana Constitutional Convention in 1850, and served in the State Legislature from 1851 to 1852. He represented Indiana in the U.S. Congress as a Democrat from 1859 to 1865, from 1867 to 1877 and from 1879 to the present time (1894), obtaining the name of the "Great Objector" by his opposition to many expenditures.
