An eminent American statesman and orator, son of James; born in Boston, Oct. 8, 1765; died there, Oct. 28, 1848. He was Member of Congress 1797-1801, and U. S. Senator 1817-22. He was prominent in the Massachusetts Legislature; took an active part in the Hartford Convention of 1814; and was mayor of Boston in 1829. His published works include: "Letters in Defense of the Hartford Convention" (1824), and "Orations and Addresses".
