Here, June 10, 1864, while the Confederate cavalryman Forrest was raiding through Mississippi, Kentucky and Tennessee, he was met by Sturgis leading a force of 8000 Federals. Forrest had 1000 men. He attacked Grierson, who led the Federal van, speedily routing him. Sturgis hurried up, but his troops were wearied out and not prepared for battle. They were put to flight and 200 baggage wagons were captured by the Confederates.
