A Rumanian poet and statesman (1812-86). After serving three years as an officer in the army he became a writer and a politician. His "Satires" and "Fables" enjoyed wide popularity. His poem "The Year 1840" was like a bugle call, and aroused the enthusiasm of the Wallachians and Servians to the highest pitch. His collected works, "Meditations, Elegies, Epistles, Satires, and Fables", were published at Bucharest, 1863.
