The following table gives the electoral and popular votes for President and Vice-President at each election. It is to be remembered that in the elections preceding that of 1804 the electors did not vote for President and Vice-President separately; he who had most votes was made President, he who stood second Vice-President. Up to 1824 electors were largely chosen by State Legislatures without popular voting.
