An American clergyman and philosophical and miscellaneous writer; born at Rutland, Mass., Aug. 2, 1804; died at Newburg, N. Y., March 9, 1884. He was professor in the University of New York 1838-52. He translated Guizot's "History of Civilization", etc., and wrote "About Men and Things" (1873); "Satan as a Moral Philosopher" (1877); "The Endless Future of the Human Race" (1879); and others.
