[Gr.] The chief magistrates in ancient Athens, chosen yearly, nine in number : the first called Eponymos, as giving his name to the year ; the second, Basileus, king, as being the high priest ; the third, Polemarch, ruler in war, as commanding the army. The other six were called Thesmothetae, settersforth of the law.
