A Swiss church reformer; born at Wildhaus in the canton of St. Gall, Jan. 1, 1484; fell in battle near Kappel, Oct. 11, 1531. Next after Calvin he was the foremost leader of the Reformation in Switzerland. His principal works, written in Latin, are: "Of True and False Religion" (1525); "The Grounds of Faith" (1530); "A Short and Clear Exposition of Christian Faith" (1538). He wrote in German: "Baptism, Anabaptism, and Paedobaptism" (1525); "A Clear Explanation of Christ's Last Supper" (1526).
